Dr. Sally Shaywitz is a codirector of the Yale Center for the Study of Learning and Creativity and a leading researcher and speaker in the literacy field.  Overcoming Dyslexia is a guide that has helped thousands of families identify and support their children with learning gaps or dyslexia.  The 2005 edition confirmed our early understanding of the dyslexic and dysgraphic brain, and the 2020 edition is what prompted the many revisions that made The Spelling Beat®️ Complete the effective system it is today. 

Dr. Moats shared everything an interventionist could possibly need to know in refining earlier stages of a literacy program, and what a great help it was to have this amazing research collection during the development of The Spelling Beat®️ systems, strategies,  and series.  Many of her statements about language and English words come directly from the Fromkin, et. al text Introduction to Language (see right).

An Introduction to Language, 11th ed, by Victoria Fromkin, Robert Rodman, and Nina Hyams, is a highly respected and extraordinarily valuable resource that explains everything a linguist need to know about the structures, history, articulation, and nuances of the English language.  

Louisa Moats is a reading science expert, and this is just one of many resources that has driven the development of The Spelling Beat®️Complete!  This fabulous list helps to break down the many terms referenced in learning science research.

This 2017 book from Dr. Mark Seidenberg really explores the research behind language development in the brain and helped the The Spelling Beat®️ creator replace less effective and efficient practices (such as the advanced PA work recommended by Dr. Kilpatrick) with those practices that instead move older students swiftly through their code sequence.  

This resource explores all areas surrounding literacy, and in the caption photo above we've included the journal's shot of The Reading Rope from Dr. Hollis Scarborough.  The Rope is explained thoroughly within the journal, and several pieces on related topics from other authors such as Dr. Ehri, Dr. Cardenas-Hagan, etc. are also included.
